The Horton plain is a plateau more than 2000m high. Sri Lanka's second and third highest mountains are located here.
The forest areas are rich in wild life with deer, jackal, monkeys, sambhur and leopards to be found there.
There are grassland areas with some unusual flora that can only be seen in mountain areas.
This is an excellent place for peacefull walking and taking in the natural beauty of this amazing place.
The plains are very popular for bird watching, some of the birds you can find here are, Ceylon whistling thrush, Ceylon jungle fowl, Ceylon wood pidgeon, Ceylon blue magpie, Ceylon hill munia, Orange-billed warbler, Dusky blue flycatcher, Pied bush-chat and Grey tit.
The outstanding natural feature on the plains has to be the world's end. the plains come to a very sudden stop, the vertical drop is 700m long. the best time to see this is at daybreak when the sun is rising and there is no mist on the mountains. It is a truly magnificent sight, one not to be missed.
