This is one of biggest mountain ranges in Sri Lanka.
It is located in the middle of the country, in Kandy and Matale district, locals name this as a “Dumbara Mitiyawatha “, meaning, ‘ Misty Valley’, because this place is always covered with mist.
It covers up to 21,000ha, with 35 mountains rising up to 900m above the sea level. The highest mountain is Gombaniya, it’s about 1900m. The people living around this range get about 60% of supplies from the forest for their day to day living.
Meemure is one of the villages located on this beautiful mountain. This area is famous for bird watching and for butterflies. Everything from mountain forest, to scrublands, can be seen in this region. From 26 endemic birds, 17 can be found around here.
This is really ideal for hikers and trekkers. From 2kms up to 20kms trekking can be done around here. From mountain wet zone to dry zone, starting from Meemure village. That’s about 4 hours walk.
Also the views in this area are very famous, as are the water falls.
Accommodation can be in portable camps, or in traditional village houses with villagers, or in Corbets view guest house, depending on the guest’s requirements.
From Kandy by vehicle, the range can be reached within two hours.
