This park is located 30km west of Anuradhapura spanning the border between north central and north western province. It covers an area of 131,693 ha.

Temperature is around 27 degrees with annual rainfall around 1000mm.

There are many birds in this park including large breeding populations of Painted Stork and Open billed Stork. There are many migratory birds as well as the endemic species.

Animals to be found here Elephants, sloth bear, leopard and water buffalo are threatened species living in this park.

There are many reptiles found here, Monitor, Mugger crocodile, Common Cobra, Rat Snake, Indian Python, to name a few.

There are nearly sixty lakes within this park.

Wilpattu is the oldest protected area in Sri Lanka. Many of the species living here are endangered species.
